Two things distinguish Avila: its eleventh-century walls, two perfectly preserved kilometers of which surround the old town, and the mystic writer Santa Teresa, who was born here and whose shrines are a major focus of religious pilgrimage. Set on a high plain, with the peaks of the Sierra de Gredos behind, the town is quite a sight, especially if you time it right and approach with the evening sun highlighting the golden tone of the walls and the details of the 88 towers. <br><br> Convento de Santa Teresa<br> The convent, inaugurated in 1636, was built on top of the birthplace of Santa Teresa, and designed by the architect Fray Alonso de San Jos&#233;. The Baroque facade of the church is interesting, and inside, with a Latin cross floor plan whose adjoining naves house magnificent sculptures by the master Gregorio Fern&#225;ndez.<br><br> Palacio de los Velada<br> Hotel Palacio de los Velada is a splendid 4 star hotel which stands proudly beside the 11th century cathedral in the very heart of Avila . This 16th century civic building has been beautifully restored and offers a very comfortable stay. Within easy walking distance, you can visit the St Peter's Church, St Vincent's Basilica or take one of several walking tours of the city.
