<I>St Teresa of Avila, The Famous Walled City</I>

Avila is World heritage. Two things distinguish Avila: its eleventh-century walls, two perfectly preserved kilometers of which surround the old town, and the mystic writer Santa Teresa, who was born here and whose shrines are a major focus of religious pilgrimage. Set on a high plain, with the peaks of the Sierra de Gredos behind, the town is quite a sight, especially if you time it right and approach with the evening sun highlighting the golden tone of the walls and the details of the 88 towers. <br><br>
Convento de Santa Teresa<br>
Inside the south wall on Calle Dama, the Convento de Santa Teresa was founded in the 17th century on the site of the saint's birthplace. Teresa's famous written account of an ecstatic vision in which an angel pierced her heart would influence many Baroque artists, most famously the Italian sculptor Giovanni Bernini. The convent has a small museum with relics -- including one of Teresa's fingers; you can also see the small and rather gloomy garden where she played as a child.<br><br>
Palacio de los Velada<br>
Palacio de los Velada is the place to stay in Avila, so if you can afford it, do not think twice. Location couldn’t be better... The building called Torreon de los Velada comprises several houses dating from the fifteenth century. They were all substantially reformed during the sixteenth century, preserving their medieval air. The House of los Velada presumably had a very active life until well into the seventeenth century and was frequented by monarchs and courtiers. Proximity to the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, made of it a suitable lodge for sovereigns or courtiers. <br><br>
